How do you set up goals? Effective goal setting is done the S.M.A.R.T. way.
What does SMART stand for? S.M.A.R.T. stands for Specific. Measurable. Attainable. Realistic. Timeline.
Keep in mind that every word in the acronym S.M.A.R.T. goes together. We want our goals to be specific enough that we can envision and visualize ourselves achieving them. Our goals should be measurable, meaning that that we should be able to know when we’re moving forward, towards the finish line, in this case achieving our goals. Make your goals attainable. Don’t get me wrong, it is very important to have big dreams for yourself, I am simply saying that you have to set achievable goals that will get you to making your big dream a reality. You know yourself better than anyone, so be real with yourself here because a realistic goal for you might be an unrealistic goal for someone else. Give yourself a timeline because than you will find yourself working even harder than you would have thought because you are challenging yourself, it’s you against you, and you will be pushing yourself to succeed and achieve your goals!
SMART goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and they have a timeline.
Let’s say your goal is to get better grades in school, I’m using this example because as a teacher I know a ton of students have this goal for themselves.
If you write down and say your goal is “Get better grades this year”, that is a great goal to have but it is not concrete and is missing parts of the SMART method.
So let’s rewrite this goal to be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and have a timeline. “I will have better grades on my next report card that comes out on Friday, March 8, 2023”. Now, do you see how that is a lot more powerful and solid than simply saying, “Get better grades this year”?
You see how setting a goal using the SMART method is more concrete, making it more powerful?
